Google has launched a new video-calling app called Duo, in a direct challenge to Skype and Apple FaceTime.

The Google app, Duo is being build as a simpler, more easy way to see family and friends as you talk to them.

iPhones have a minority share of the smartphone market, where Android is dominant.

Duo isn’t available to Android users in the United Kingdom as yet but will be in the coming days.

Unlike other Google apps, users do not need a Google email ID to use Google Duo. My experience with Hangouts has been ripe with glitches, dropped calls and general confusion.

The app is focused on simplicity, and allowing users to initiate a video call quickly and effortlessly so long as they have someone else’s phone number. Here’s a look at some of the unique features of the Duo app. “Duo takes the complexity out of video calling, so that you can be together in the moment wherever you are”, the company posted on its official blog.

Duo is simple from start to finish. When any user will sign up the app for the first time, the app will check their phone number from SIM after which a confirmation text will be sent out.

The new video calling app is also well secured with company taking care of all privacy issues and end-to-end encryption during all Duo calls.

“Hold on, guys. I’ve got to get this”, a man off-camera says. Basically it’s a video version of knocking on the door.

Google Duo is available on the App Store as a free download. It’s rolling out now to Android and iOS devices, and will be live globally in the next few days. Now before you rush to open the Play Store let us tell you that the app is currently available in few regions only. As a result, unlike FaceTime, you won’t be able to use Duo on anything but your phone. Tell us what you think on Facebook.
