Police say another man was in serious condition after the shooting.

He was sitting on his front porch with a friend when shots rang out. Police spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement that he and Superintendent Eddie Johnson served as patrol officers together in the 6th District.

The victim’s grandfather said he had planned to head back to college St. John’s University in NY on Sunday afternoon.

“Officer Dennis dedicated his life to make this city safer, and his son Arshell was a good kid, making his parents proud and studying for a promising future as a journalist”, Supt.

Police do not not now have a motive for the shooting, though one theory is that Dennis was mistaken for another young man.

Arshell “Trey” Dennis III, the son of a Chicago police officer, was identified as the slain victim, PIX11 affiliate WGN reported. He was later pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in nearby Oak Lawn. He arrived in town Thursday to see his mother before starting the school year and was planning to leave for school Sunday afternoon.

Alfonso R. Kyles was found on a sidewalk about 3 a.m. just south of the entrance to Touhy-Herbert Park in the 2100 block of West Adams Street, authorities said.

“This young man was taken supposedly by our own, and we’re going to stand up for (Dennis)”, activist Ja’Mal Green said.

“He was a lovely young man, full of laughs and always teasing us”, his grandfather, also named Arshell Dennis said.

Johnson issued a statement to news media stating changes are needed in how repeat gun offenders are dealt with in the criminal justice system.

“Trey was smart, amusing and the light of our lives”, they added.

The weekend’s first fatal shooting happened about 10:15 p.m. Friday in the Englewood neighborhood.

Arshell Dennis III, the son of a Chicago Police officer, was killed in an Ashburn attack early Sunday.

“I do think that I’ll be able to influence a lot the way people think”, Arshell said. “I knew it was gunshots and I was thinking, just like everybody else thinking now”. About 11:35 p.m., Louis Carrasquillo and a 26-year-old woman were in a vehicle going east in the 3300 block of West North Avenue and, while they were stopped at a red light, another auto pulled up next to them and someone shot them, authorities said.
