Milwaukee Police Chief Blames Chicago Agitators for Weekend Riots

Police say they arrested 10 people overnight but that Milwaukee’s north side was much calmer than over the weekend when violent protests over the shooting of a black man rocked the area.

Some two dozen officers in riot gear confronted a group who were throwing rocks and other objects at police near where the black man was fatally shot a day earlier. Angry crowds threw bottles and bricks at riot police.

Protests first erupted Saturday, when a crowd of about 200 turned violent following the shooting of Smith, who was in a vehicle with another individual when he was stopped by two police officers. “Being on the street, doing things of the street life: Entertaining, drug dealing and pimping ― and they’re looking at their dad like, ‘He’s doing all these things'”.

Shots were fired at several different locations throughout the area, though all were within close proximity.

In an emailed statement to Mic, the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s division of criminal investigation confirmed Monday that it would make the body camera video available after the investigation is completed and after the local prosecutor makes a decision on whether to criminally charge the officer in Smith’s shooting.

The proclamation Mayor Tom Barrett issued Monday expanded the curfew to apply to anyone under 18.

“I want the video released”. “And no matter what the circumstances are, his family has to be hurting”. Nor is it to excuse Mr. Smith himself, who had an extensive arrest record.

The problems began Saturday afternoon when police stopped a rental vehicle that was driving suspiciously, Flynn said.

Flynn says he believes they have made a difference, resulting in less destruction Sunday night than the previous night.

The mayor said Smith did not drop the gun as ordered before he was shot.

“It was in his hand”. Smith was hit in the chest and arm, Flynn said. Numerous protests across the nation – particularly those that led to the Black Lives Matter movement – involved white officers killing black men. It is not clear how numerous group went to Milwaukee.

Peace may finally be returning to the streets of Milwaukee, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the city’s newly mandated curfew will be lifted anytime soon.

Between Saturday night and Monday morning, police reported 31 people were arrested, including three juveniles.

“What happened tonight may not have been right and I am not justifying that but no one can deny the fact that there are problems, racial problems in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, that need to be rectified”, Rainey said.

“Now this is a warning cry. That wasn’t what we went up there to do”. Where do we go as a community from here?

Police Chief Edward Flynn said spreading “rumor mill” will only fuel protesters.

There have also been reports that protesters are attacking journalists covering the unrest.

Flynn also said that officers came under fire Sunday but that no officers returned fire.

She asked people for donations for his burial.

“They see the institution as racist, not the individual”, Cross said.

Unrest followed the fatal shooting of Alton Sterling, 37, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in July.

Almost 40 percent of Milwaukee’s 600,000 residents are black, and they are heavily concentrated on the north side. According to police, between 200 and 800 people were part of the protests. The Brookings Institution think tank last December ranked the segregation of cities on a scale of zero to 100 using U.S. Census Bureau data.
