The cast of Walt Disney Pictures’ upcoming Nutcracker movie continues to grow today as Variety brings word that two-time Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley is set to take on the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy.

Based on the classic Tchaikovsky ballet and a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, the tale centres on a Nutcracker doll who comes to life on Christmas Eve and introduces a young girl, called Clara, to a fairytale world of living toys. It is a signature piece of the Nutcracker ballet, which contains many instantly recognizable melodies.

Variety broke the news that Knightley will play the Sugar Plum Fairy, the ruler of the Land of candies who welcomes Clara and the Nutcracker Prince to her kingdom, where she performs the famed “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy”.

Lasse Hallström will helm the Disney project from a script by Ashleigh Powell.
