Michael Phelps swimming Rio 2016: The Legend Retires

When Michael Phelps chose to try for the Rio Olympics, after his short-lived retirement following the 2012 London Games, the reasoning was perfectly clear to him.

Certainly there have been dazzling women’s gymnasts who grab a lot of TV time as well, but by the nature of that sport the cast is always changing.

Phelps is yet to announce his career plans after retiring from the Olympics.

Phelps dominates the first week.

It only took 17 years – and 43.03 seconds.

Their styles are very different.

While Olympic athletes were getting some well-deserved rest, Olympic officials are racing through the night to drain the murky green water out of a pool at the troubled Maria Lenk Aquatics Center. Others in the mix include Andrew Fisher, a Jamaican who competes for Bahrain, Jamaican Yohan Blake, Americans Marvin Bracy and Trayvon Bromell and Frenchman Christophe Lemaitre. Before he kneels in the starting blocks, he dances and preens. The two swimmers were neck-and-neck as they hit the wall for the turn and, while underwater, Phelps took a long look to his left to see where he stood in the race. “I was in the stadium”, said Ludwig, who is at the Olympics for the third time, finishing ninth and fifth with Sara Niedrig. Indeed, Phelps must rank as the greatest Olympian of all time.

At age 31, he leaves Rio with five golds and a silver.

Not his training partner clipping his heel in the Olympic final Saturday in Rio de Janeiro.

The U.S. also won 33 medals at Sydney in 2000.

Usain Bolt sauntered onto the track Sunday night and waved his hands, signaling for more applause even before the race in Rio de Janeiro began. Although she did not specify the date, she said that they already picked a date for the special day within this year.

“No matter what country you swim for you’re indebted to Michael Phelps”, Murphy said. With a new coach and a bevy of swimmers atop the world rankings, they were tipped to win up to 11 gold. The sprinter is committed to running through the 2017 world championships and then will supposedly retire, although I could certainly see him running at least the 200 in Tokyo in 2020.

Swimmers in the women’s Olympic marathon will test Rio’s dirty waters, tackling a 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) course off Copacabana Beach.

But the USA team that many considered a gold medal lock won’t even win its group outright with a loss Sunday, either tying France or sharing first with the French and Australia at 4-1.

If Michael Phelps’ first gold of the Rio Games will be knowns as “The Turn”, his last should be dubbed, “The Peek”. But again, Owens competed in only one Olympics.

He won four gold medals for the 200-meter butterfly and 200-meter individual medley, as well as in both the 4×100 and 4×200-meter relays. “I think it showed in his swimming, it showed in his demeanor, and it certainly showed in his leadership on the team”.

Early Monday morning, Bolt described after winning the 100 a recurring dream he has been having where he is being chased. I’ve had so many people say to me, ‘You blink an eye, it’s over.’ They grow up so fast.

The goal is to pump in almost 1 million gallons of clean water before the synchronized swimming competition takes place Sunday – and even if everything goes right, they will finish barely four hours before it begins.
