Prime Minister Narendra Modi praises Mulayam Singh for pulling up Congress

Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu appealed to the Congress to allow the Parliament to function for the remaining four days saying government was willing to consider any meaningful suggestion to break the deadlock, but it failed to break the ice.

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Monday held a meeting with representatives of all political parties in the Lok Sabha to find a way out of the logjam in the lower house.

He said parliament would function after External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj disclosed her family’s financial transactions with former Indian Premier League (IPL) chief Lalit Modi, facing investigation by the Enforcement Directorate.

The Congress disagreed with this and insisted on suspension of question hour. “It is typical of the Congress Party…We condemn this”, he added. “If there is harm to the country, to the system let it be”, finance minister Arun Jaitley told reporters. Having being so badly rejected by people of India, they are trying to derail development which the Modi government wants to do, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said today.

The Congress leader also took a dig at Modi.

It said thatthe deadlock in Parliament would end when the Prime Minister takes action those indulging in “gross impropriety and corruption”.

The GST that seeks to replace all indirect taxes, with a uniform levy has already been approved by the Lok Sabha and was in last session referred to a Rajya Sabha Select Committee.

“The credit for the parliament work belongs to the responsible and mature opposition whereas the blame for derailment in the previous 10 years lies with the BJP”, Sharma said.

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill has faced stringent opposition from many states in the past and that is why the bill could not be passed by the previous Congress government.
