Reality TV star Kim Kardashian rejects ‘feminist’ label

Blogger Tova Leigh is “Team Kim”, telling Independent Journal Review that she really admires how “hardworking and driven” Kim is. The pre-teen Kardashian was rocking a super sleek bob for her middle school milestone with a white button down. Others, of course, believe that her fixation on her body reinforces the female objectification that women have fought to dismantle for centuries. And I don’t think that I am. Every time it comes up-and it comes up often because it’s been the Most Popular Interview Question for Human Women since 2013-she’s said the same thing in marginally different ways. I don’t like labels. It’s similar to when Sarah Jessica Parker called herself a humanist – which is not exactly what that word means, by the way – but still identifies with feminist causes.

Despite the lengthy list of why she could be seen as a feminist, the mom-of-two noted she doesn’t feel the need to be “defined by those beliefs”.

“I don’t like labels”, she said at the time.

Last week, Kim said at a conference that she doesn’t think she’s a feminist because although she loves and supports women, she’s not a “free the nipple type girl”. I do what makes me feel comfortable, and I never say what I’m doing is the right thing.

“I don’t need to be defined by those beliefs, just as much as I don’t want to be set apart from – or viewed as being against -those who DO define themselves by those beliefs”.

Okay. We know that everyone should be treated equally.

The “Keeping up with the Kardashian” star kicked off her defense by providing a textbook explanation of a feminist as “someone who advocates for the civil and social rights and liberties of all people, regardless of their gender”. The reality star, however, denied being one – but, suggested she simply has a mindset of a feminist. “I’m all about empowering and uplifting women. But, at the end of the day, no one should feel pressured to be labelled as anything just because they believe in certain things and support certain values or ideals”.

Look, I get this desire to live in a magical world where we are all identical beings of flawless light.

Kardashian West is the latest celeb to distance herself from the feminist moniker. We live in the midst of a gender equality revolution, and in any, there are inevitably stragglers, people who are on the wrong side of history, or people who opt not to take a side at all.
