Cheez-It 355 at the Glen recap

“He raced with us, shared his stories with us and became our friend”. Our team executed perfectly today.

It’s such a steep drop-off from last season, when he won four races, led over 1,000 laps and knocked down top-10 finishes in all but 13 races. Busch quickly got by him for third, but he was a distant third behind Harvick and Logano.

“I feel like I’ve had some good runs here in the past”, said Hornish.

“We were in a position to have a win, two corners away, but that’s just been the way the middle of this season has gone”, Harvick said.

“All in all if you have the fastest vehicle and keep leading laps you are going to wear them down”. “I have to be on my “A” game to have a shot to win”.

And he’s right. Gordon, who was 42nd two weeks ago at Indianapolis, has just one top-five finish since May.

“I started to catch him a little bit and I drove into one too hard and started to wheel hop”. He can’t afford to have a poor finish like at Pocono last week, which forced he and crew chief Adam Stevens to take it easy in Sunday’s closing laps. Inside 10 laps to go, Logano obtained by Kenseth for second, sending Kenseth into Busch’s clutches.

“There actually wasn’t any dialogue (about technique)”, Logano stated. He won the pole on the road course at Sonoma in June before faltering when a fuel pickup problem sapped the power of his No. 47 Chevrolet.

“At this rate we’re going to need to win”, he said.

Perhaps Jeff Gordon should have known what was to come this season, his final as a NASCAR driver, when he crashed on the last lap of the Daytona 500.

While he is being touted as one of the up and coming bright minds in the Sprint Cup garage, Pearn plays down his success so far in his young career.

Last year, AJ Allmendinger used his victory at Watkins Glen global to qualify for the 16-driver Chase for the Sprint Cup field.

“Tracks like Sonoma, that’s basically home for me, where I was born and grew up, and the effort that they put into that final race there and the way that the fans responded was incredible”, he says.

The only hope for most drivers was another driver running out of gas prior to the white flag, which would lead to a caution flag in the final laps.

NOTES: is the all-time wins chief at Watkins Glen Worldwide with 5 victories.

On Sunday, after Logano received the Cheez-It 355 at The Glen trophy, he was handed a broom for sweeping both the Cup and Xfinity Series events. The consolation prize to Busch: The four-time 2015 race-winner cracked the top 30 in the standings, six points ahead of Cole Whitt despite missing the first 11 races.

Busch, who is just outside the top 30 in points, is starting in a good spot with five races left in NASCAR’s regular season. That makes Busch eligible for the Chase.

“Nothing we can learn from these tracks really applies to the Chase”.

Kevin Harvick out in front on the last lap but he runs out of gas, Joey Logano makes the pass and Logano criuses into victory lane once again for the second time this weekend. We got three second place finishes here. “Those cautions all along the road just killed us”. “It is the concerns of freak things happening like what happened to us at Indy, what happened to us here”. It wasn’t meant to be what we needed today. I didn’t get a clean lap and couldn’t get everything out of it. We’ll have our work cut out. “I never quite got close enough to him to pick him off”.

For Smith, the day turned much worse.

After the crash Habul joked about how he would start to feel better.
