Second-seeded Simona Halep of Romania also advanced, outlasting 13th-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in hot afternoon conditions.

Following a month off since her last competitive match, Halep looked sharp as she opened the North American hardcourt swing by reaching the third round in Canada for the first time.
The match itself saw an incredible 17 breaks of serve, with seven of these coming in the second set as Kerber broke back and then managed to get ahead right as a tiebreak neared, taking the set 7-5 to level the scores and take the match to a decider. Victoria Azarenka of Belarus upset third-seeded Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-3.
Seventh seeded Czech Lucie Safarova was the big casualty, falling 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 to Russia’s Daria Gavrilova.
Fourth seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark and Wimbledon finalist Garbine Muguruza were also sent crashing out of the event.
But Halep, runner-up at the French Open last year, did just enough to eliminate the 13th seed and advance to the quarter-finals against Agnieszka Radwanska, who beat France’s Alize Cornet 6-2 4-6 6-2.
The qualifier required just 77 units to defeat the 21-year old Muguruza that has increased towards the closing at Wimbledon after her work to range eight on the planet.
Wozniacki had only one ace and double-faulted 3 times as she dropped 7-5 to Swiss Belinda Bencic, 7-5.
The Spaniard was the surprise package at the All England Club as she reached her maiden grand slam final, her run eventually ended as Serena Williams cruised to the title 6-4 6-4.
