He will miss the first three games on the Red Sox’s 11-game trip.

This will be the second of a quick two-game match-up.

David Ortiz and Jackie Bradley Jr. each homered in a three-run sixth inning, and that was all the Boston Red Sox needed to post a 3-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Monday afternoon at Progressive Field.Cleveland had a chance to tie it in the bottom of the ninth as Francisco Lindor led off the inning with a double into the left-field corner against Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel.Mike Napoli drew a walk, and was replaced by pinch runner Tyler Naquin.

Wins such as this have been only slightly less rare than solar eclipses. He hasn’t pitched since August 1.

Miami’s former reliever David Phelps pitched into the sixth inning in only his third start of the season to steer the Marlins to a 6-3 win at Cincinnati. The ones that do qualify don’t advance very far.

One game shouldn’t mean all that much, but it can show Orioles fans that there are five reasons the team could be getting ready for an extended October run.

Dylan Bundy has won six games, and has shown evidence that he’s going to be a bona fide major league frontliner.

In their last game, the Red Sox won by a margin of one run. Next time, Red Sox Nation, next time.

“Our backs were to the wall, but (Kimbrel) did what he’s been doing for so many years”, Farrell said.

Ortiz, meanwhile, continued to make his 20th and final season in the majors a home-run show, even at age 40. That’s the difference in winning the division, winning a wild card.

Pomeranz set the tone with his best start since he was acquired in a July 14 trade with the San Diego Padres. With the Red Sox leading 3-2, Kimbrel gave up a double and a walk to the first two batters he faced, but then struck out the next two batters and got the third out on an infield pop-up, to pick up his 20th save. Cabrera appeared to injure himself in a first-inning collision with Cheslor Cuthbert at first base, but batted twice before leaving the game. “Obviously that’s a really good lineup, but they’re also really swinging it well”.

“He doesn’t cease to amaze”, Farrell said. “That was the decision”.

In five career outings versus Baltimore, Rodriguez has registered a 1-3 record and a 4.97 ERA.

This is where everyone finds out what the 2016 Boston Red Sox are – playoff contenders or just a relentless bunch of bullies picking on bad teams.

Craig Kimbrel, the sixth Boston pitcher, worked a flawless ninth for his 21st save. After Mike Napoli drew a walk, Kimbrel struck out risky Carlos Santana on a 98 miles per hour fastball, fanned pinch-hitting Kipnis with a 96 miles per hour heater and got Abraham Almonte to pop out.

“This was a great win for us”, said Drew Pomeranz (1-2), who pitched into the eighth inning. “To get one here is a big confidence boost to us all”. But more troubling is that in his last three starts, Tomlin has given up a grand slam to the Yankees’ Starlin Castro, a three-run blast to the Nationals’ Jayson Werth and a two-run moon-shot to Ortiz.

Give them their due: Sometimes, the other team is just better on a given day.

Pomeranz had been 0-2 in five starts for the Red Sox. The blowouts will become fewer and farther between. If the Red Sox can’t win close games, they’re toast. That’s just how it is.
