(Vatican Radio) Mexican authorities confirm that one of six men abducted at gunpoint from a restaurant in the global vacation resort of Puerto Vallarta is a son of the jailed leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel.

A group of six or seven people suspected to be members of Guzman’s feared Sinaloa Cartel were abducted by eight armed men from an upscale eatery in the heart of the resort early on Monday.

“Jesus Alfredo Guzman Salazar, 29, is the son of Joaquin (Guzman) Loera, this has been confirmed”, and he is among those being held, regional public prosecutor Eduardo Almaguer told a news conference.

The Associated Press reports that the largest criminal organization in the area is the Jalisco New Generational cartel, which rivals Guzman’s Sinaloa cartel “as the most powerful of Mexico’s drug gangs”.

At the news conference, Almaguer identified four others who had been kidnapped, but said law enforcement had no leads as to their whereabouts.

The Mexican army, marines, federal police, state police and the country’s top prosecution office are searching for the missing men as well as those responsible, Almaguer said. “There is no report made by anybody regarding the abduction of any of these victims”, Almaguer said in an interview with Mexico City’s Radio Formula Tuesday morning.

Earlier Tuesday, Guzman family attorney Pablo Badillo said it was “very likely” that Ivan Archivaldo was abducted from the restaurant.

Almaguer had also said that Ivan Archivaldo was among those kidnapped, though he eventually backpedaled on the claim.
