Samantha Wagner, a former Palmer Township resident, tied for seventh place after Tuesday’s second round of stroke play qualifying for the 115th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at the Portland Golf Club in Portland, Oregon.
Wagner advanced to the 64-player match play competition, which begins Wednesday.
Just last month, Gillman played in the U.S. Women’s Open in Lancaster, Pennsylvania; competed for the United States Pan Am games in Toronto; then headed to the Women’s British Open in Turnberry, Scotland. “Putting is the strongest part of my game”.
“It’s good to have a good start, but I want to play better and just continue playing with this momentum”, Ha said. She was co-medalist with Vanderbilt senior Jennifer Hahn, who shot a 70 that included three birdies and a bogey.
With almost 500 people gathered around the first hole of the par-72, 6,364-yard Portland Golf Club course, Mitchell was among 16 women’s golfers vying for the 10 final spots in the match-play.
Sixteen players were tied for 55 at 4 over par and a sudden-death playoff to determine the 10 players who advance was suspended after one hole because of darkness. It is the sixth time that the tournament has been played in Oregon, but first time at the 100-year-old club in southwest Portland. Messana, who is going into her sophomore season at Clemson, was eliminated when she bogeyed the first playoff hole. She finished fourth out of 81 competitors at Sapona Ridge Country Club with a round of 2-over-par 73.
Defending champion Kristen Gillman, 17, of Austin, Texas, tied for ninth at 2 under after a 71.
