LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Suicide Squad” isn’t looking as bright in weekend two.

Analysts have put the major drop down to negative critical reviews and bad word-of-mouth, the film now holding a B+ Cinescore when superhero films normally score around an A.

“Sausage Party” is an original computer animated picture about talking grocery store items that realize what horrors await when humans purchase them.

“When you have something so fresh, it just stands out to audiences”, said Rory Bruer, Sony’s distribution chief. Suicide Squad still managed to break box office records, despite David Ayer’s controversial remarks and a spate of negative reviews.

Sony’s raunchy R-rated comedy “Sausage Party”, co-written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, debuted in second place with $33.6 million, outpacing its reported production budget of $19 million. Sony spent over half the marketing on digital, which trends in a much less costly direction than traditional ad buys, so with a $20 million budget this will be a big profit for the studio. It’s a pattern that was seen earlier this year with the superhero movie “Batman v Superman”, which is also based on DC Comics characters and was released by Warner Bros.

Pete’s Dragon flew into the #3 spot with $21.5 million.

As for the watchers, I believe that as long as we do not understand what the DCEU is, we are going to feel disappointed over and over again. The story of the orphan Pete and his pet dragon Elliot features Robert Redford and Bryce Dallas Howard.

The Matt Damon action movie Jason Bourne ran its domestic total to $126.8 million with a $13.6 million weekend – good enough for fourth place.

The only other new release of the weekend was the Meryl Streep fronted Florence Foster Jenkins. STX Entertainment’s Bad Moms rounded out the top five with US$11.4 million. She added that the studio is confident that Streep and possibly her co-star Hugh Grant could end up in the hunt for awards, something which could goose revenues.

Line Walker, a Hong Kong-Chinese crime film, took third place, earning $26 million.

The specialty marketplace saw an impressive debut from the Jeff Bridges-Chris Pine film Hell or High Water which made off with an estimated $592,000 from 32 locations for a solid $18,500 average.
