Canadian Drouin wins high jump gold

Derek Drouin, who hails from Corunna, took the gold medal in high jump on Tuesday night at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Ukraine’s Bohdan Bondarenko took the bronze and was the last threat to Drouin but missed when he skipped 2.38 meters to try 2.40 meters on his final attempt.

Drouin was faultless through to 2.38 metres, Qatari Mutaz Barshim claiming silver with a best of 2.36m.

2012 Olympic silver medalist Erik Kynard of the United States, wearing patriotic high socks, finished sixth. Representing the United States will be Vashti Cunningham, the daughter of former National Football League quarterback Randall Cunningham, four-time Olympian Chaunte Lowe and Inika McPherson.

“Drouin made six straight attempts, the final jump of that streak was 2.38 meters (7’9 3/4”).

“Just like you’ve been punched in the stomach”, she added. I certainly was calm and I was hungry to come out here and win gold. The 2012 silver medallist, Erik Kynard of the US finished tied for fourth.

Meanwhile, Johnathan Cabral of Peribonka, Que. will hope to make it into medal contention by racing in the semifinals in the 110-metre hurdles.
