At 2-0 down against New Zealand in the men’s field hockey quarterfinals, Germany leveled on Furste’s penalty corner goals in the 56th and last minutes, the latter with 41 seconds to go.

Moritz Fürste and Christopher Rühr were both on target in the final ten minutes, but it was not enough to stop Germany’s quest for a third successive Olympic gold medal coming to an end. We can’t just rest on our laurels here and think that because we’ve had a good win in the quarters it’s going to happen in the semi.

After being outshot 5-2 in the first half, Team USA came out in the third quarter looking to regain the form it had early in Olympic competition.

The women lost their quarterfinal late Monday, ensuring they won’t medal for the first time in 20 years.

It’s worth reminding New Zealand sports fans the latest edition of the Bledisloe Cup begins on Saturday night – a trophy the All Blacks have held since 2003.

Hauke gave Argentina credit for making tactical adjustments since the teams fought to a 4-4 draw in pool play.

“This is insane”, midfielder Lucas Rey said.

Australia coach Graham Reid knew what was happening right away.

Germany, meanwhile, dumped out the United States with a 2-1 victory yesterday. That’s when Germany replaced its goalie for an extra forward to try and limit the roasting.

But that was always going to be a hard ask as New Zealand scored a goal in each of the first two quarters to get out to a 2-0 lead, one Australia never really looked like clawing back.

As the score mounted, Menini said their prime thought was not, “We’re smashing Germany by a record score”, but more, “Don’t lose this”. “We are in the final but we have to play like it’s a normal game and not feel the pressure of that”.

Not until the last minute did Argentina coach Carlos Retegui, responsible for numerous women’s triumphs, finally accept he’d masterminded the men’s biggest success yet, and began hugging his assistants.

“They just outplayed us today”.

All three of Peillat’s goals came from penalty corners, and the 24-year-old praised his side’s tactics and preparation before the game. They were never then able to manufacture any sort of meaningful comeback in the final term, despite another goal from Slattery with just more than a minute to play, and were dumped from the tournament before the medal stage. “It’s disappointing for us, but we want to get the bronze medal”.

“The first 10 minutes I though “uh oh”, here we go we are in trouble here, they really hurt us and got into our circle a few too many times and we scrambled really well and defended well and defended well”, Hager said.
