Delta is also offering some compensation to travelers who have been “significantly affected” by delays or cancellations ($200 for anyone delayed over three hours, details here).

Ryan Shannon, another passenger on the Lexington-to-New York flight, said passengers boarded, were asked to exit, waited about 90 minutes and then got back on the plane.

Speaking from the airline’s operations center, Bastian said “we’ve got Delta teams working around the clock to restore our system capabilities”. At least nine flights scheduled to depart from Louisville International Airport on Monday were delayed.

In response to the disruptions, Delta is waiving change fees for customers ticketed to travel Monday. About 300 flights were canceled on Tuesday morning.

“We believe that Delta experienced an equipment failure overnight that caused a power outage, ” Craig Bell, a spokesman for Georgia Power, told USA TODAY.

Other Delta flights at KCI were listed as on time Tuesday with only a few shown as delayed.

Industry experts have begun linking airline computer system failures to corporate mergers that require integrating older computer systems from rival companies into a single, expanded system operated by the new corporation. He said no other customers lost power.
