Blame It on the Rain: Blue Jays’ Bats Awaken After Rain Delay
J.A. Happ won his 11th consecutive decision to become the first 17-game victor in the majors, and Melvin Upton Jr. hit a three-run homer that propelled the Toronto Blue Jays past the New York Yankees 7-4 on Wednesday. He allowed one run and seven hits in six innings April 13 in Toronto and, May 26 in New York, Happ allowed one run and three hits in a 3-1 win.

Impressive rookie Gary Sanchez homered twice for NY, including a titanic, three-run drive deep into the rarely reached second deck in left field. Adam Warren and Chasen Shreve combined to allow eight runs on five hits, three walks, a hit batter and two home runs in only a third of an inning. Their opponent was the Blue Jays, who were tied for first place in the American League East, and the Yankees had finished smacking one of their top starters, Marco Estrada. They lost for the second time in seven games and failed again to move five games over.500 for the first time this season. By the time it was over, the Jays had scored eight runs in the inning (a snowman after the rain delay) and were up by the half dozen they trailed earlier in the evening. The Blue Jays took the game, and the series, with a 7-4 win.
Probably the best thing to happen to the Toronto Blue Jays Tuesday night was watching the skies above Yankee Stadium open up. He quickly came around to score on a Josh Donaldson infield single that coupled with a Chase Headley error on a wild throw to first. Two strikeouts later, Tulowitzki popped a two-run homer just beyond the short porch in right field, and Martin followed with a home run to center.
“I would have loved to send him (back) out there, but what he went through with his shoulder, I just felt he couldn’t do it”, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.
Tulowitzki singled in front of Martin’s 12th homer, a high fly to right that put Toronto ahead. This was only a six-game homestand, but before that three-game swing through Boston, the Yankees had a five-game homestand. That wasn’t good for an offence that had gone 14 straight innings without a run in the Bronx. Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run home run, giving him 34 and 99 RBIs while Troy Tulowitzki had a two-run home run among four hits.
Happ won 19 games and made 50 starts after Toronto obtained him from the Houston Astros in a 10-player deal on July 20, 2012. Judge added a single, scoring a run.
Eovaldi was placed on the disabled list Thursday.
That’s the way it went in Monday’s 1-0 to rookie Chad Green and the Yankees, which triggered the latest round of hand-wringing. New York LF Brett Gardner (sore right ankle) missed his fourth straight game but could start Wednesday depending on how he feels in pregame baseball activities.

“I’ve got no complaints”, Gibbons said before the game when asked about his team’s approach at the plate. Donaldson was the DH, with Barney playing third base. He allowed two unearned runs in seven innings of a 3-1 loss at NY on May 26 and two earned runs in six innings five days later in Toronto.
