Canadians rejoiced in the young sprinter’s performance that saw him dip dramatically at the line to nab third behind the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, and American Justin Gatlin.
Canada’s Andre de Gasse, bronze medallist in the 100, ran the quickest time of the session, clocking 20.09 to cross first in the final heat.
” I wanted to run as hard as I could…”
Bolt didn’t beat his world record time, but he was still able to win the race with an impressive time.
“I haven’t really focused on the boos, you have to dial that kind of stuff out”, said the American, who had been looking to become the oldest man to win the Olympic title.
“I really expected to go faster, but the turnaround time was really bad for any athlete”.
It was however, one of the tightest races that Bolt has run during his legendary career.
And I think you get more confident and more experience every time you cover a major event like this. “I was like ‘Yo, I probably could run a fast time, ‘” he said.
The South African sprinter Wayde Van Niekerk broke Michael Johnson’s 17-year-old world record on Sunday night in Rio de Janeiro, leaving two of the greatest one-lap runners of this era in his dust.
“When I crossed the line I looked up at the screen because I had tunnel vision and I didn’t even know where I was placed at so to see that I was second, I was honoured with that”.
Bolt said he had been surprised at the crowd booing Gatlin.
The 200m semifinals will be contested on Wednesday, with the final set for the following day. “It was ridiculous as far as I am concerned, because I felt so good in the semifinals”.
‘I didn’t because I was exhausted going into the finals and I was just like ‘let me focus on what I need to focus on, ” he said.
Among the “top three” photos Spencer has ever taken, the Bolt shot will be entered into competitions, including for a Pulitzer Prize, Spencer tells THR. I wasn’t pleased. I wasn’t happy about the fact that they changed the schedule.
It’s the latest meme to join the ranks of #PhelpsFace, born of the epic swimmer’s game face in Rio, and, from London 2012, McKayla Maroney not being impressed.

SPENCER: I’ve heard that he has commented on it and said that he loves it, but I haven’t actually heard directly from him (laughter).
