Michael Phelps: Wins 22nd Gold Medal in 200m Mens Individual Medley

That’s why Thursday night, I took a page out of our National Columnist Joe Ponsanski’s book and threw the rule out about cheering in the press box – or, in my case, the newsroom.

Combined, the pair has all of the top 10 recorded performance in the event.

“Being able to finish how I won is just something very special to me and this is why you are seeing more and more emotion on the medal podium”.

Ryan Lochte, a team mate of Phelps could only manage fifth with a time of 1 minute 57.47 seconds.

“Things started to hit me this morning”, he said. As his five-time Olympian career comes to a close in Rio, he will go down as one of the most dominant swimmers in the history of the sport.

In the women’s all-around, Simone Biles is the favorite to win gold and Aly Raisman will be a medal contender. It is not. Indeed, the actual order of events at the Games underscores what an extraordinary achievement it is for Lochte to have won any medal at prior Games in the 200 IM. Lochte beat him, and set the standing world record of 1:54.00 in that race, a time even Phelps hasn’t topped. Michael Phelps can’t end his career just yet, right?

“I just don’t see it happening”, Bowman said. “He won’t give up and that’s awesome. That’s why he brings out the best in me and hopefully I do the exact same for him”.

The Kiwi pair hit their trademark stride at 750m and never looked back in their quest for New Zealand’s first Rio gold. He plans to marry his fiancé after the games and focus on life with their infant son.

“The competitive environment between those two guys has always been good”, said Gregg Troy, who coached both swimmers at the 2012 Olympics.

The Brazilians have a stake in the 200 IM, too. Thiago Pereira could deliver the host country’s first swimming medal of the games.

“Winning four in a row, when the announcer said that, I had a really hard time holding it together”, Phelps said in a poolside interview, adding that owning 22 Olympic gold medals is part of his dream come true.

As usual, Phelps pulled off the grueling double, advancing to Friday night’s final with the fifth-fastest time. Bronte is the reigning world champion, but Cate is the world-record holder. He already has golds in the 4×100 and 4×200 freestyle relays, as well as in the 200 butterfly.
