Back-to-school with the threat of Zika

With the school year coming up, Governor Scott has asked the health departments to make sure that parents, educators and students are aware of Zika virus and are capable of combating the disease.

DHS officials said in a statement Wednesday there are fewer than 20 people in Wisconsin who have confirmed cases of Zika virus.

As of August 2, health officials said that any New Yorker over the age of 5 should be screened if they exhibit three or more of the disease’s most common symptoms: fever, a widespread, bumpy skin rash, joint pain, or pinkeye.

Rick Scott said Tuesday that four more people have acquired the Zika virus locally, probably from mosquito bites in the Wynwood neighborhood.

The woman became infected while traveling outside the country and is expected to completely recover, according to a press release from Riverside University Health System.

In the meantime, the CDC is urging pregnant women and their partners to stay away from Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood – the first time the CDC has ever warned against travel to an American neighborhood for fear of an infectious disease.

The cases bring the total number of locally transmitted cases in South Florida to 21. “In the rest of the city, you’re more likely to get killed in a auto crash than you are to get Zika virus”.

Even if you live in an affected area, there are things you can do to protect yourself and your baby, like wearing long sleeved shirts and trousers.

Symptoms include rashes, mild fever, muscle and joint pains, head aches or red eyes. DOH has concluded that no local transmissions of Zika are occurring in the newly cleared area (see map below- shaded area denotes cleared areas).

The CDPH is actively monitoring all pregnant women with Zika infection in California, and is collaborating with local health departments to provide assistance to families with infants born with Zika-related birth defects to ensure they receive appropriate medical care.

The Zika virus (on the right) runs the risk of being mistaken for the flu (on the left) because they both present similar symptoms. “To date, 45 CT residents have tested positive for Zika virus, all occurring as a result of travel to Zika-affected countries or territories in the Caribbean and Central and South America”.

Sexually active adults who travel to areas with Zika transmission should use condoms or other barriers in order to avoid getting or passing Zika during sex.
