Tina Fey And Michael Schur Are Working On New Comedies For NBC

The network’s chairman, Robert Greenblatt, said that the show will be millennial-centered, “about an up-and-coming woman working at a cable news network where her mother happens to get a job after going back into the work place”. The news was confirmed today during the Executive Session at NBC’s day of the Television Critics Association Press Tour. Considering how much critical success Fey and Carlock have seen from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, a series that NBC ordered and then passed on, its likely that the network will try to streamline the production process here.

As if that weren’t exciting enough, the network also picked up a comedy from Parks and Recreation co-creator Mike Schur called A Good Place. Greenblatt likened the protagonist to Parks & Rec’s Leslie Knope (played by Amy Poehler) in that she’s a “strong, funny, complicated female character”.

Fey and Carlock, the creative minds also behind Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, will produce an untitled comedy from Emmy-winning writer Tracey Wigfield (30 Rock).

The project will be produced by Universal Television, 3 Arts Entertainment and Little Stranger. Fey, Carlock, Wigfield and David Miner are executive producers.

Fey and Carlock have proven to be a bit of a dream team.

The deals come after NBC has admittedly struggled with comedies in recent seasons.

Straight-to-series pickups have become increasingly common as broadcasters, cablers and streaming services compete for original scripted fare in a crowded landscape with more than 400 series on the air. Karissa Miller has written Imaginary Friend, a project about an unmotivated woman with a unique way to get through life. Originally from Virginia, Miller is a writer and actor in New York City. They are based in Los Angeles.
