Olympic 2016 Medal Count: Wednesday’s Easy-to-View Nation Rankings and Results

Great Britain’s Laura Trott had a sizeable 24-point lead entering the final event of the omnium and she easily held on to win to the gold. Although they won only six this time – one less than the previous two Games – Britain only had entrants in nine of the 10 events, as the women’s sprint team didn’t qualify.

The pair, who have a reputation for being hard working, say they hope to be able to continue without attracting too much attention.

Although both women backtracked on their apparent suspicions – Meares tweeted that “I would like to clarify that I never said or insinuated that #TeamGB are cheating or doing anything suspicious”, while Vogel said “I never said they take any drugs or have a bike with engines, but they always seem faster at the Games” – they’re not the only ones who have raised eyebrows.

“And I think back to those moments and I think, how on earth was she the one that made it to be Olympic champion, you know?”

After taking gold, Kenny embraced his fiancee and fellow gold medal victor Laura Trott, who was in tears in the centre of the track. “And look what I have just done”, she added. In time they will hog the limelight but they settled for silver and bronze respectively in the women’s individual sprint here. “Obviously, things like that come with medals, I get that, but me, I just feel like that eight-year-old who started cycling because she absolutely loved it”.

People love these insane kids, and it’s not hard to understand why. But it’s something that I would like to take on, the idea of winning six gold medals.

She said: “We were so happy with the support we get back home and it’s nice that if it inspires the next generation to get out there, if that means people wants to come and speak to us, then so be it”.

David Beckham knows what we’re talking about.

“The amount of times that Laura kicked up a fuss on hills because dad and I were dropping her [and she said], “if you don’t slow down I’m going to ring mum, she can come and pick me up”. So I was a little bit nervous that they might attack me like you wouldn’t believe, but I felt in control and I felt strong out there.

“I could watch Laura’s points race as relaxed as possible, although I missed the end because I went to the toilet”.

Germany’s Olympic sprint gold medal victor Kristina Vogel has complained that her dominant British rivals have an unfair advantage, though she is not sure what it is.
