Firefighters said the blaze was fully involved when they arrived and that heavy black smoke was coming from the second floor.

The fire occurred at Shemwood Crossing Apartments on Shemwood Lane. A total of four units were damaged, plus a few adjacent units, said Public Safety Deputy Director Dennis Magirl. At one point, firefighters went into defensive mode, meaning it was too risky to fight the fire safely. Multiple agencies are helping fight the fire.

American Red Cross disaster-trained volunteers assisted 3 families, consisting of 3 adults and 13 children, when their homes were destroyed by the fire. It’s unclear what started the fire.
