No More Wilmore: Comedy Central Cancels The Nightly Show

There is no confirmation of what will replace The Nightly Show, but the network is looking to Daily Show correspondent Jordan Klepper for a potential program. Nielsen data found that Wilmore received only 776,000 viewers a night this year, compared to 2.1 million for “The Daily Show”.

The news also created a divide between fans of “The Daily Show” and “The Nightly Show”, who seemed to believe there’s only room for one on the network.

“When we took a hard look – especially after the conventions, where we also didn’t see any traction we were hoping for – we didn’t have enough evidence to justify committing to another year”, the executive said in the statement. “I guess I hadn’t counted on “The Unblackening” happening on my show”.

“It’s been struggling for quite a while as far as connecting with our audience”, said Alterman. “I actually ended up liking The Nightly Show a lot, because then I thought, ‘Well, people can now define their own notion of the show, ‘ ” Wilmore told EW in 2015.

In a surprising announcement on Monday, the New York Times reports that Comedy Central has canceled the late-night show, and that Thursday will mark its final episode on the air.

In addition, Alterman made note that Wilmore’s contract, along with the show’s other staff members, were set to expire in the coming weeks, and as a result, a decision to move forward or conclude had to be made. He is a creator of the upcoming HBO comedy “Insecure”, starring Issa Rae, which premieres in October. “Jimmy Fallon, the host of ‘The Tonight Show, ‘ has most formidably filled the power vacuum left by his predecessors, with the highest ratings of any late night show”. At the very least, his show will be missed for the way it tackled the increasingly visible issues that black Americans face every day-like police violence-with blistering wit.
