Kobo’s Mammoth E-Reader Does a Few Tricks Your Kindle Can’t

Kobo used input and feedback from its most voracious reading customers to design the Aura One, and one point they made was that existing backlit e-readers’ screen lights were relatively cool in colour temperature, which can affect the body’s Circadian rhythms and lower the quality of sleep – pretty annoying, since reading before bed is a pastime for many.

In addition, Kobo has also announced an update to the Kobo Aura. The new Kobo Aura will also be available in select countries on September 6th for $119USD, with availability in other countries at a later date.

Kobo’s new Aura ONE e-reader is attempting to change all that.

The device features a large 7.8-inch 300 ppi e-ink display that’s bigger than most other e-readers and is created to reduce exposure to blue light, so it’s easier for users to fall asleep after reading for a while at night.

Another interesting feature of the Aura One that Kobo is trying to highlight is its “ComfortLight Pro” display technology that uses RGB bulbs instead of white ones, so that the blue light can be filtered out during late-night reading sessions.

But can it win over people who’ve been eyeing Amazon’s recently introduced Kindle Oasis? So this means that it can be submerged in 2 meters of water. The Aura one weighs in at only half a pound and is only 6.9mm wide, despite having a 5.9 inch screen. Overdrive is said to be the biggest provider of e-books to public libraries, and with the user’s library credentials plugged into the Kobo Aura One, titles that can be borrowed instead of purchased will also show up when searching through the Kobo store. There’s also an ambient light sensor to modify the brightness depending on the time of day.

With 8 GB of storage, the Aura One can hold up to 6,000 books, and the 512 MB of RAM and 1 gHz processor make for smooth and speedy page turns.

As is the case with most eReaders, there’s a range of font sizes and designs to choose from, as well as options regarding text weighting and sharpness.
