Tomlin allows 2 homers as Indians lose 3-2 to Red Sox

Bogaerts is batting.313/.368/.455 with 14 homers and 69 RBIs in 112 games.

Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz slugged a two-run homer to help the Red Sox beat the Cleveland Indians 3-2 on Monday.

Wins such as this have been only slightly less rare than solar eclipses. But Bradley worked the count to 3-2 then pounded a ball over the right-field wall for his 19th home run, giving Boston a 3-1 lead. Wright is 13-5 with a staff-leading 3.01 ERA through 22 starts. The ones that do qualify don’t advance very far. Pedroia is batting.307/.374/.454 with 12 home runs and 53 RBIs in 112 games.

Cleveland Indians catcher Chris Gimenez (38) tags out Boston Red Sox’s Travis Shaw (47) at home plate attempting to score on a single by Dustin Pedroia during the third inning of a baseball game Monday, Aug. 15, 2016, in Cleveland. “He said he’s going throw today and see how he feels. We are pretty confident in who we have in this clubhouse and what we can do as a team”, Kimbrel said after he got out of a two-on, none-out jam and reached 20 saves for the sixth consecutive season. “Any game you win, that’s what matters to us”.

David Ortiz and Jackie Bradley Jr. each homered in a three-run sixth inning, and that was all the offense Boston needed.

Cleveland Indians’ Rajai Davis rounds the bases after hitting a solo home run off Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Drew Pomeranz during the fourth inning of a baseball game Monday, Aug. 15, 2016, in Cleveland.

Once again, Farrell left himself open to second-guessing by sticking with Pomeranz to face Davis again with a runner on second in the eighth.

MORE ON FULMER: Tigers manager Brad Ausmus reiterated the club’s plans to watch Michael Fulmer down the stretch here.

It backfired on Farrell when Davis lined an RBI double to cut the margin to 3-2. But the combination was too much as the Indians dropped a 3-2 decision in the battle of American League playoff contenders at Progressive Field.

Cleveland had a chance to tie it in the bottom of the ninth as Francisco Lindor led off the inning with a double into the left-field corner against Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel. Carlos Santana and pinch-hitter Jason Kipnis struck out, and Abraham Almonte hit a drive to right that hooked foul before he popped out. “They’re trying to accomplish the same thing we are”. They have come to expect this kind of performance from Big Papi, who has 530 career home runs.

“I’m going to continue to say I don’t know why”, he said. He is 0-1 with a 12.91 ERA in five games (one start) this year.

It has been an utterly fantastic farewell year to everyone, except to the Red Sox.

The Orioles (66-51) ended the road trip level at 5-5, but find themselves deadlocked with the Blue Jays for first place in the AL East entering the second half of August. His latest outing against Baltimore resulted in a 5-1 Red Sox loss on June 16. The blowouts will become fewer and farther between.

I can’t speak for the man, but I imagine Josh Tomlin hopes to straighten out his season today against a risky Red Sox lineup.

“Oh, we’re going to have to win a lot of these games down the road”, Kimbrel said.
