For an unprecedented sixth year in a row our city has been voted the world’s most liveable.

Instability and fears over terrorism have made life more challenging in numerous world’s leading cities over the past year, according to analysis by the Economist Intelligence Unit. This year, Melbourne narrowly topped Vienna by 0.1 percentage points, followed by Vancouver, Toronto, and Adelaide, which tied in fifth place with Calgary.
Ideal scores in healthcare, education and infrastructure guaranteed that Melbourne would retain its number one ranking.
It’s another big coup for Melburnians, according to Lord Mayor Robert Doyle. He says Melbourne officials are constantly planning and implementing policies that would continue to improve quality of life in the city.
Herald Sun reports that there was a 20 percent decline in liveability of the cities surveyed by the business magazine because of heightened fears over terrorism.
“Violent acts of terrorism have been reported in many countries, including Turkey, Australia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, France, Belgium and the U.S.”, the report said.
“Factors such as social unrest in many USA cities due to the deaths of black people in police custody, tensions in Eastern Europe and Asia and the ongoing civil wars in Ukraine, Syria and Libya have compounded the decline”.

Melbourne’s culinary credentials have also been acknowledged with the recent announcement that the city will host the World’s 50 Best Restaurant Awards in 2017, becoming only the second city outside of London to host the prestigious awards.
