Teammate’s bat hits Rays’ Franklin in helmet

On Wednesday against the San Diego Padres, the 25-year-old was struck in the head by a teammate’s bat while standing in the on deck circle. He was held out of the lineup Wednesday night against the Cubs, and both Braun and manager Craig Counsell said he might be ready to play Thursday in Chicago and definitely expect him to play over the weekend in Seattle.

Center fielder Kevin Kiermaier was swinging a bat bearing a weighted donut prior to the bottom of the first inning when his backswing struck second baseman Nick Franklin in the batting helmet.
“I feel great. really like nothing happened”, Franklin said. “I’ve been not just bad but awful this last two weeks”. I felt a little bit dazed.
After the inning, Franklin left the game with what the Padres described as a head contusion.
Franklin was immediately checked by Rays trainer Ron Porterfield and was given a concussion test, which he passed.

Padres: OF Jabari Blash (sore knuckle) got the day off. … While initially remaining in the game en route to drawing a walk and scoring in the first inning, Franklin was then removed from the contest as a precaution.
