Liz Cheney claims victory in Wyoming primary for US House seat

Yesterday’s results don’t guarantee Cheney’s place in Congress, but given Wyoming’s status as a ruby-red state, it’s widely assumed that the victor of the Republican primary is well positioned to win the U.S. House seat in the fall.

Cheney, a former State Department aide and the eldest daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, fended off seven other challengers in a primary to replace outgoing Republican Rep. Cynthia Lummus, who is vacating the seat Cheney’s father once held.

Her campaign focused on President Obama’s national security and energy policies, promising to work for the state’s struggling coal industry. Cheney is the best funded candidate in the Republican field, bringing in more than $1.5 million through July.

Republican voters waited Tuesday night for poll results in the most competitive USA primary contest in Wyoming in over 100 years – a race that is a test of the Cheney family brand in the state. Leland Christensen and state Rep. Tim Stubson.

She will face off against Democrat Charlie Hardy in November, but experts believe she will easily win the state. Greene, who works for his family’s oil-services company, was bullish about his chances after winning his primary Tuesday night.

But she has the support of at least one of the Freedom Caucus’ likely incoming freshmen: Indiana Republican Jim Banks, who benefited from the caucus’ political action committee, the House Freedom Fund, in his 3rd District primary, donated to Cheney.

Simpson has been a strong Cheney supporter this year, and Republicans in the state say Cheney has acted on her political aspirations the right way this time by running for an open House seat and making her way around the state.

“I’m honored by the trust Wyoming Republicans have placed in me to serve as our next Representative in Congress”, Cheney said in a statement. He was vice president for the younger Bush, President George W. Bush, from 2001 to 2009.

She was heavily involved in her father’s two campaigns for vice president and in 2012 she became a commentator for the conservative Fox News television network.

“We’re excited to take on Liz Cheney”, he said. “I know her dad slightly, and of course from his record, so that’s what I’m going by”, he said.
