Knox edges Kelly to win Travelers Championship
The most fantastic moment of the day came early in the morning when Jim Furyk became the first golfer to shoot a 58 on the PGA Tour.

“I’m a big beast rolling in that putt”, said Knox, who had said he was a “beast” at TPC River Highlands after his second-round 67 on Friday.
Jim Furyk’s 12-under round bettered the previous record of 59 which had been shot six times, including by Furyk himself.
Like his record-breaking round at the Travelers Championship, Furyk would break 60 and fail to win the tournament.
U.S. WOMEN’S AMATEUR: South Korea’s Eun Jeong Seong won the U.S. Women’s Amateur to become the first player to win the event and U.S. Girls’ Junior in the same year.
“I am hitting it well”.
“No one else can say they’ve done that out here on the PGA Tour”, Furyk said of his 58. Other notable finishes included Patrick Reed tying for 11 at nine-under while last year’s victor Bubba Watson finished tied for 25 at seven-under. “You couldn’t really quite see it, but I could hear it kind of smack the pin in the hole, like it hopped in”. “Then you run out of holes usually”. And what’s curious about that is if you look really close, you’ll notice that Furyk was nearly put down for a 3 by playing partner Miguel Angel Carballo on the par-4 14th (on the PGA Tour, as in most competitive golf settings, players’ scores are kept by their playing partner). Before that, his last appearance was in 2001.
Furyk’s early morning round began with two goals: not shooting another 72 and hoping to catch his flight home a little early. The other choice was next week’s John Deere Classic – a tournament he has never played. He talked during the week about being “mentally drained” but fought back on the back nine on Friday just to make the cut on the number.
After he made a 2-foot putt for par and his 58th stroke on the last hole, he hugged caddie Mike “Fluff” Cowan and walked up the hill toward the scoring trailer, accompanied by chants of “58, 58”.
“It was in the shade”.
Justin Thomas: Thomas went out and shot 62 on Sunday and got housed by four strokes for low round of the day by Furyk. Furyk told the pair he wanted to donate it to the Bruce Edwards Foundation, which supports research in the fight against ALS. The gallery grew with each passing hole.
With the six 59s on the PGA Tour, there was always some debate as to which was the best. “I made a pathetic swing”. He shot 32 on the front nine, then went to 5 under for the day when his second shot on the 13th hole found the cup for an eagle from 113 yards. A birdie at the 12th hole was his seventh straight and he finished with a two-foot par putt on 18 at the River Highlands course in Cromwell, Connecticut.
The 23-year-old Berger swore it wasn’t nerves and you’ve got to believe him.
“I guarantee you [Furyk] would trade places very quickly with me”, said Knox, who cracked the top 20 on the world golf rankings with his victory. “It was close enough that I couldn’t mess it up”.
