He and the two other rescue volunteers then sheltered in place as medical units, as well as special enforcement teams from Placer and Nevada counties, were sent to the shooting site.

Agencies from Placer County, the Grass Valley Police Department, Yuba County and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, among others, are assisting the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, Royal said.

Authorities have called off the search in Nevada County for the gunman investigators say shot and wounded a search and rescue volunteer. “We don’t know at this point”, Royal said.

Royal said the helicopters were also being used to transport teams to the area where the shooter remained at large late Tuesday.

Nevada County Sheriff’s Office has been searching for the missing hiker for the past five days, Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal told NBC station KCRA.

Authorities took him by helicopter to a trauma center where he underwent surgery and is in stable condition.

The initial search for a missing man has transformed into an all out effort to find the person who fired at an innocent volunteer.

“Steve volunteers and responds to nearly all in- and out-of -county search requests”, Erwin said in the press release.

The rescuer was hit in the hip and wounded in a remote area of Nevada County, Northern California, around 65 miles northeast of Sacramento.

“We have approximately 240 search and rescue volunteers who donate their own time to meet strident minimum standards and specific ongoing teams training requirements”, Erwin said. “Please keep Steve Wolf and his family in your thoughts, along with the deputies tasked with bringing the suspect to justice”.
