After Two Nights of Unrest, Milwaukee on Edge as Curfew Approaches
Barrett renewed his call for state officials to release a video of the Saturday night shooting in hopes it would convince angry protesters that deadly force against Sylville K. Smith, 23, was justified.

But officials, including Gov. Scott Walker who briefed the media after meeting with Milwaukee police at a nearby station, think the curfew will reduce tension.
“This is not the place where you go to gawk, it is not the place where you go to take pictures, it is not the place to drive your vehicle around”, the mayor said. A 10 p.m. curfew was instituted for people under 18.
Barrett has urged parents and guardians to keep their children home and away from the Sherman Park neighborhood where the violence Saturday night left six businesses burned.
The officer involved in the most recent Milwaukee shooting was 24 years old and has been on the force for three years, according to the department. The shooting is under investigation.
Walker, a Republican who mounted a failed campaign this year for president, reassured residents that he knew “there are larger issues than what happened this weekend to address” in Milwaukee, which is one of the most segregated cities in America, according to a report late last year by the nonprofit Brookings Institution.
The officer’s name is not being made public.
Dorow says those teams are likely monitoring the types of threats being posted against the officer, and tracking the accounts associated with those comments.
“There were groups of young people in particular, who were travelling in the streets”, Mr Barrett told a news conference on Monday.
“Burning down sh*t ain’t gonna help nothing”, she said.
Milwaukee’s mayor says a 10 p.m. curfew on teenagers will from now on be strictly enforced. “I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some concern in your own minds, but I want to tell you that you have chosen an incredible path for your life”, Barrett says.
There was “no major arson or property damage”, police chief Ed Flynn said in an update just before midnight, NBC News reported.
Alderman Khalif J. Rainey, who represents the Sherman Park neighborhood, issued a statement, saying: “I need to be perfectly clear about these two things”. Flynn said they would not be deployed unless the chief chose to do so.
“They see the institution as racist, not the individual”, Cross said. Three police squad cars were damaged and 14 people were arrested, authorities said. A police officer was injured and also taken to the hospital after a rock broke the windshield of a squad vehicle, according to Milwaukee Police.
He also said the city might have hesitated to reveal the officer’s race sooner for fear it would identify him. Arrest records for Smith released by the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday showed that Smith had been arrested at least nine times since 2011 on charges including robbery, carrying a concealed weapon, and drug possession. McLaughlin said. “He needs to stay on the job”.
An 18-year-old man was wounded Sunday by gunfire and 11 law enforcement officers were injured as protesters pelted them with rocks and bricks, authorities said. When police moved in and threatened arrests if the crowd didn’t disperse, some threw rocks, concrete and debris at the cops.
The city was calmer on Monday evening after two nights of unrest.
Smith, 23, was shot while fleeing a traffic stop.

In an emotional piece (which has since been edited), CNN shared with readers the story of residents trying to heal following massive rioting in the city that started after police shot and killed Sylville Smith when he refused to drop a gun.
