“It means so much to me, their support”. “If I end up with a gold medal standing on the podium, I’m not sure I’ll ever take it off”, Ko said.

An observation concerning Katie Ledecky: The woman is chill.

“Now I’ve got the silver medal, which means gold for me”, said del Potro, who won bronze at the 2012 Olympics.

Her cheering fans, and other young swimmers around the country, are a source of inspiration for Ledecky. That just made me emotional.

“We are in great shape, not only with Katie but with the team that we have now”, Phelps said.

One of them said Ledecky’s dominance was nothing new.

He wound up getting engaged and becoming a father for the first time. Between Simone Biles, who has totally owned Women’s Gymnastics this Olympics and Katie Ledecky, who literally leaves everyone in her wake when she swims. “And there is nearly an identical picture from the Olympics where there was no one else in the pool”, her teammate said.

Another teammate spoke of Ledecky’s humbleness and the distinction between two worlds.

Said Japan coach Yosuke Kurashima, “He won a bronze in the singles here after years of not being able to win one, and I think he’s been liberated from the pressure that was on him”.

Going second in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay, Phelps produced the fastest split of his career and put the Americans out front for good against a powerhouse field that included defending champion France, Australia and Russian Federation. “Personally, having been lapped by her twice in the 500-meter freestyle, I can definitely attest to what it feels like being that far behind”, Palmer joked.

“It’s pretty insane”, she said Wednesday afternoon.

BuzzFeed talked to Eagle editor Kelly Brown on Monday, and though Brown admitted that the headline could have been better, she also defended the paper’s choices. “Those are something I’m looking forward to”, he said. The teenager has been so focused on swimming, she hasn’t gotten her driver’s license yet. “I still have my learner’s permit”. Ledecky is also about to start her freshman year at Stanford University.

Ledecky and Phelps, though, seem to be good at keeping their heads above all of this.

China’s sports system had been enormously successful since the country returned to the Olympic fold in 1984, culminating with the host nation topping the medals table at the 2008 Games it hosted with only a slight dip into second place behind the United States in London four years later.
