Liz Cheney won the Republican primary election for Wyoming’s sole House seat on Tuesday night, all but ensuring that she will occupy the seat once held by her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, as he rose to national prominence.

Cheney, 50, won a nine-way primary in the at-large congressional district with about 40 percent of the vote. Cheney is the best funded candidate in the Republican field, bringing in more than $1.5 million through July.

Since then, The Wall Street Journal reported Cheney committed herself to cementing ties in Wyoming, frequently visiting diners, church functions and other social gatherings to reinforce her familial roots in the nation’s most rural state.

Cheney ruffled feathers when she ran for the Senate in Wyoming in 2014 against incumbent Republican Sen.

They will try to win Rep. Cynthia Lummis’s seat, who has decided not to seek a fifth term in Congress.

Wyoming is a reliably red state, with the Republican primary victor all but assured of a general election victory in November.

The Democratic Party primary contest sees Charlie Hardy, a retired Roman Catholic priest, facing Ryan Greene, an oilfield services executive from Rock Springs. He is a political newcomer but says he’s held a variety of jobs in the oil patch.

Tony Henry, of Cheyenne, said Tuesday that he switched his party registration from Democrat to Republican specifically so he could vote against Liz Cheney.

Over the weekend, Christensen had earned the endorsement of Kentucky Sen. It didn’t work; they were more distracted by the fact that she had few apparent actual ties to Wyoming. He also posted a video to his social media accounts urging people to vote for Christensen. Thanks to their hard work, tonight we are one step closer to achieving renewed leadership on behalf of our state in Congress. We share an abiding love for Wyoming, its traditions and our western values.

“You know, a Liz Cheney Republican is somebody who is a strong constitutional conservative, believes in limited government”, she said, noting to Kane that she disagrees with some of Trump’s foreign policy positions. I will be that voice.

“This just became Wyoming versus Washington”. “The Wyoming voters made a choice and we’ve got to respect that”.

Christensen will continue to serve as a senator in the Wyoming Legislature.
