Colin Kaepernick will not play vs. Broncos, hope is for Packers

While fans and the media following the San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback competition this summer have focused on who is winning, new coach Chip Kelly always has stressed another aspect of the duel.

Time of possession: One of the big issues for Kelly during his tenure with the Eagles was how much his defense was on the field.

Interestingly enough, there is a connection between Christian Ponder and Blaine Gabbert.

It was unclear whether Lewis would have made the final roster, which would have been determined in part by Driskel’s play in the preseason. Kelly explained that Gabbert needs to control the ball and the situation, but added that it is still a long way to go. “So we want to err on the side of caution and make sure he’s 100-percent as we get rolling”. The goal is to get him ready for next week’s game against the Green Bay Packers.

The 49ers played the Houston Texans on Sunday in the only preseason game on the National Football League schedule.

It is all blurry with Kaepernick and 49ers management (Kelly at this point is probably just a bemused bystander), and it has been like this for months. Starting quarterback Blain Gabbert, however, was just 4 of 10 for 63 yards and one touchdown. Following a rough pair of drives, Gabbert launched a touchdown drive before rounding up the game.

“It was up and down, both Blaine and our first-team offense. He’s a talented player that’s why we moved up in the draft to get him”.

Texans: “Knowing my family and friends are in the stands really supporting me, that was a dream come true”, said Anderson, who grew up in nearby San Jose. But with tightness in his right shoulder, Kaepernick stopped throwing in practice after Wednesday’s session at Kezar Stadium, and he instead reverted to his offseason-program look of shadowing other quarterbacks and occasionally participating in run-only plays.

“I think he feels fine”, Kelly said then. “He has experience in the system, he was in Philly with us a year ago, he has a dynamic personality and he has a really good chemistry with the guys on our team and so he mentioned to me today that he would like to stay around and be around the program during the rehab which would be great for us”. They could only win two games, but by the same end, we have seen a highly successful Kaepernick lead a team to the Super Bowl. Those two are expected to split first-team offensive reps against the 49ers the next two days.

The 49ers franchise had only two healthy quarterbacks – Gabbert and rookie Jeff Driskel – throw in Tuesday’s brief practice before they flew to Denver, where they’ll practice Wednesday and Thursday against the host Broncos ahead of Saturday night’s exhibition. “He was going to be in a battle for the starting job”, John Elway told USA Today earlier this week.
