USA boxer advances to gold medal bout without fighting

These cuts were sustained of course from Conlan, who easily won the fight in the eyes of the vast majority.

Men’s bantamweight (56kg) boxer Michael Conlan thought he had his quarter-final bout against Russian Vladimir Nikitin all sewn up when the final bell rang on the fight.

The U.S. women won two medals, a gold and a bronze, at the 2012 Olympics in London, with middleweight Claressa Shields continuing the defense of her gold in Friday’s semifinals.

Conlan later tweeted directly at Russian president Vladimir Putin and accused the world leader of paying off the judges in Rio.

They’re f****** cheats. That’s me, I’ll never box for AIBA again.

“If people watch this Olympic Games and they see some of the decisions …”

He also hopes that his angry reaction after the fight “opens the eyes of the world” to amateur boxing’s scoring system for athletes in the future.

“I think he’s just given up”, Conlan told Ireland’s NewsTalk 106-108 FM. I’ve got a big career ahead of me and these, they’re known for being cheats.

Irish boxer Michael Conlan may be suffering from one of the most shocking decisions ever at the Olympics, but one fan is determined to cheer him up. “The American kid’s going to pick him to shreds and I wouldn’t be surprised if they rob him too”.

“AIBA will not shy away from its responsibilities and is fully committed to a zero tolerance policy towards fair play in boxing, always acting in the boxers’ utmost interest”.

The judges’ decision in the Conlan-Nikitin fight was not the first one at the Rio Games to draw scrutiny.

In AIBA’s statement, the organization said, after reviewing all 239 bouts in competition in Rio, that “less than a handful of the decisions were not at the level expected”, but that’s still enough to warrant removal of the officials.

The organisation has come under fire in recent days after a number of controversial decisions.

The heavyweight final between Russia’s Evegny Tischenko and Kazakhstan fighter Vassily Levit raised many eyebrows when the Russian benefited from some very generous judging, while the Irish team also had major questions over the nature of Katie Taylor’s exit.
