Stacy Lewis makes 11 birdies to take lead at Olympics

She got married recently, which made her preparations – and expectations for the Olympic golf tournament somewhat limited.

She was mad that her swing was giving her fits.

But something worked as she traversed the Olympic Golf Course.

Lewis made 11 birdies, effectively wiping out a double bogey on 14. The American was at 9-under 133 after two rounds and had a one-shot lead over Britain’s Charley Hull. It helps when putts disappear into the hole. “I didn’t expect this today at all”. She figured that she wasn’t going to sweat it after getting married on August 6.

Lewis’ 63 matches her career low score.

“There would have to be something seriously wrong for me to not come and play in the Olympics”. Just a different feel about it. Feels like a different tournament.

“I don’t know if something seemed to click and I got some more confidence as the day went on. I’m looking forward to doing all this other stuff versus the golf, and that’s what this week is about for us”.

Lewis struggled to a one-under 70 in the first round, but found a groove Thursday, closing with four straight birdies to take the clubhouse lead.

Lewis’ last victory came in the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship in June of 2014, and she’s finished second 11 times since then. And she was grumpy, her husband said, but in a good way because that makes her bear down. “Wasn’t in contention very much”.

“It’s just the way that we are on our tour, when you have a chance to represent your country you go”, Lewis said. Ahead of an LPGA event in Portland at the end of June, the two-time major victor pulled out a few DVDs of some of her wins from the past and tried to find something.
