Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn fails to recognise Ant and Dec on BBC

During the show undecided Labour Party supporters gave their verdict on the candidates after a leadership debate.

Among the speakers at the Momentum event is Richard Seymour, a far-left blogger who previous year wrote of Josh Hasten, an Israeli writer reporting on anti-Jewish attacks in Israel, “F**k him, they should cut his throat”.

“Who?” they tweeted back with a winking emoji. I think we have got to win over two million people who voted Tory just a few months ago.

The event in Birmingham was the fourth.

Mr Smith came out on top when asked to name Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber from a photo.

Mr Smith said: “The reason we are having this contest today is that 170 socialist Labour MPs don’t feel that Jeremy is offering leadership”. The conference will be held at the same time as and less than a mile from the official Labour Party conference. “We are beginning to look at one another as though we are each other’s enemies”.

But he went on: “The suggestion he [Mr Corbyn] is the only socialist in our party is an insult to many of us who are socialists”.

Despite the snub to two of the UK’s National Treasures when the panel were asked who they would be supporting after the debate there was a decisive switch to Mr Corbyn.

Elsewhere in the debate, Mr Smith berated Mr Corbyn for his “ineffectual leadership” in the Shadow Cabinet and for failing to address Brexit at the first Prime Minister’s Questions after the European Union referendum.

Responding to the boos, he said: “This is what is going on with the Labour Party”.

Mr Corbyn criticised Mr Trump’s “simplistic statements” as being “quite often beyond belief”, adding he hopes he is not elected president.

Mr Smith reiterated his strong support for keeping the United Kingdom in the EU, telling the debate: “I would fight for us to stay in the European Union. I do apologise, it’s all right”.
