Rio 2016: Dalilah Muhammad wins gold medal in women’s 400m hurdles

RIO DE JANEIRO Dalilah Muhammad of the United States led from start to finish to take the gold medal on Thursday in the women’s Olympic 400 meters hurdles.

The U.S. athlete dominated the 400 hurdles, racing to a clear win in 53.14 as the U.S. finished 1-3 to once again lay claim as the best hurdling country in the world. The 26-year-old from New York City bested runner-up Zuzana Hejnova of the Czech Republic (53.55) by more then four tenths of a second.

At U.S. team trials last month, Muhammad was the first woman in three years to run a heat in under 53 seconds.

Coming into Rio, the USA had won five silvers and two bronze medals in the women’s event, which was first added at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.

Croatian Sara Kolak won the javelin gold medal with 66.18 meters, holding off Sunette Viljoen of South Africa, who took silver with 64.92.
