Britain bags 6 golds track cycling at Rio Olympics

She helped the British women’s team win the pursuit at the weekend, adding to her two golds in London four years ago. We set ourselves up to be successful every four years. “There was clearly doubt, everybody wanted the best and fairest possible outcome and I think they did achieve that”. I went there without expectations, so to win two golds was just incredible.

On Tuesday, Laura Trott cruised to victory in the omnium shortly before her fiance Jason Kenny rounded off a momentous six days by powering to keirin gold, his third of the Games.

The Briton finished with 230 points, 24 clear of her nearest rival, in a discipline that was once her Achilles heel.

Kenny’s father Michael told the Standard he would be “grateful” if his son was rewarded with a knighthood, but it was “up to her Royal Highness”.

Team GB’s golden couple Jason Kenny and Laura Trott look forward to getting away from the glare of the Games after a glittering Olympics.

The 28-year-old, who also won team and individual sprint gold, serenely negotiated the first and second round, effectively a semi-final, before the final, which was aborted after the first start by the officials.

Boasting a staggering five gold medals between them at Rio 2016, the pair’s valour in the velodrome means they would now sit 13th in the Olympic medals table had they been a country.

“At my first Olympics in Beijing I knew we had something special to build on”, said Kenny. “She’s my little pocket rocket”.

One thing Laura does want for her man? She’s had asthma, but she fought through that.

THE UK’s most successful female Olympian has been forced to defend her sister after a television interview following the British team’s success at the Rio velodrome.

“You come back and you go to the world championships, and you don’t have the same Olympic equipment, the same skinsuits, the same wheels”, she said. James won the silver and Elis Ligtlee from the Netherland bagged the bronze medal.

“I am proud of them both”.

“The amount of times that Laura kicked up a fuss on hills because dad and I were dropping her [and said] “if you don’t slow down I’m going to ring mum, she can come and pick me up”. I’m glad she won, it makes her happy. “So to come back and do it again is unbelievable”.

The 15 British track cycling athletes have won a whopping 11 medals between them – six of which were gold, four silver and one bronze.

A slew of comments from other cyclists and coaches have followed GB’s huge medal haul from the Rio 2016 games. Some on social media branded her “jealous” and said it must be “cold in her sister’s shadow”.

After she had secured her gold medal ahead of British riders Becky James and Katy Marchant, she struck a more conciliatory tone.

It was Kenny’s third triumph in Rio, following his golds in the team sprint and the men’s sprint.
