Uber launching self-driving cars in Pittsburgh this month

When the cars are completed, Uber will buy them from Volvo.

Interestingly, it seems rides in the Uber XC90s in Pittsburgh will be free – rather than the going rates of around £1 a mile – as Uber rolls the service out, with the claim that once they can offer the cars without a human co-pilot it will be cheaper to use an Uber autonomous XC90 than your own auto.

“I turned him [Kalanick] down three times”.

Uber spent years amassing an army of 1 million drivers around the world.

Volvo aims to launch an experiment involving self-driving cars in China, Britain and Sweden. Speaking to the publication, Kalanick told of his belief that the Uber app can improve self-driving mapping and navigation systems due to the vast amount of data it generates.

Although other companies including Google are testing self-driving cars on public roads, none offers rides to regular people. Bloomberg reports that Volvo has delivered just a few of these modified SUVs so far, but will reach 100 by the end of the year.

Uber is moving fast.

“The goal is to wean us off of having drivers in the auto, so we don’t want the public talking to our safety drivers”, Travis Krikorian, Uber’s co-founder and chief executive, told Businessweek. “This can’t just be about science”. Last month, it purchased Otto, a start-up company that is working to bring self driving long haul trucks to market.

Uber also announced that it is acquiring a self-driving startup called Otto that has developed technology allowing big rigs to drive themselves. They wanted an opportunity to showcase their talents much sooner than they could if they remained at Google. Anthony Levandowski, Otto’s co-founder, will take charge of Uber’s self-driving efforts in personal transportation, delivery and trucking. He intends to beat Tesla, Apple, Google, Ford, and Genera Motors to the punch.

What many forgot were the hundreds of people who died in vehicle accidents caused by human drivers that day, Walker Smith said. “We are focusing on that”.

The self-driving ambitions of Uber would not only pioneer the company in the ride-hailing industry but also lessen its dependence on human drivers, which has caused financial and legal hurdles for the California-based firm.

At first, trips in the self driving Volvos will be free. But its CEO, Travis Kalanick, has said that without drivers, the cost of hailing a ride will be cheaper than owning a vehicle.
