Former NFL player Darren Sharper was sentenced to 18 years in prison Thursday for drugging and raping up to 16 women. She had previously rejected a nine-year proposal related to the same charges.

Sharper pled guilty to putting the drugs in the drinks of women and sexual abusing them while they were unconscious.

One of the women Sharper admitted to drugging and raping addressed the court with an emotional statement just before his sentencing was announced. “I don’t know why I lived my life right for 38 years, and then I took this path”. The first two women making the courageous decision to hold Sharper accountable for his despicable actions led to multiple other women coming forward with their stories. He also has pleaded guilty or no contest in state courts in Louisiana, Arizona, California and Nevada to charges arising from allegations of drugging and raping women.

Sharper was responsible for a spate of attacks in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New Orleans and Tempe, Arizona, which ended in January 2014. Sharper’s sentence was short of the maximum and he was also fined $20,000.

“For the list of people you’ve done this to: Go to hell”, said the woman, whose name was withheld. One is expected to get 17 years and the other 10.

The 40-year-old was accused of drugging women in order to rape them.

“We can never ignore the damage you inflicted on those women and society at large”, Milazzo said of Sharper Thursday, according to the AP.

Sharper was a member of the Saints (with whom he won a Super Bowl ring), Vikings and Packers.
