Scott Durant, Tom Ransley, Matt Gotrel, Paul Bennett, Matt Langridge, William Satch, Andrew Triggs Hodge and Pete Reed made the men’s eight team, with Phelan Hill as cox.

But today the British team held on to win by half a length over the German rowing team in a strong performance, while the Dutch team took the bronze medal. Today was about delivery and doing what we have done.

Reed added: “I’ve never been so ready for an Olympic Games before”.

Following the race, Eddie told the BBC: “We have worked so hard to get here but it is not just for us it is for everyone who has rowed in the women’s eight in the last 20 years”. This team has not suffered defeat since 2006, claiming every world title over a 10-year span.
