After another violent night, teens get strict curfew

The unrest peaked when a gas station was set on fire and gunshots prevented firefighters from doing their job.

Barrett said the 23-year-old man who died was stopped by police for “suspicious activity”. The state is investigating. He and other officers have received threats since the Saturday shooting.

Over the course of two nights more than a dozen officers were hurt and a number of police vehicles have been damaged as well.

Speaking at a Sunday night vigil, Smith’s sister, Kimberley Neal, told The Associated Press that the family wants prosecutors to charge the officer who shot him.

“We have to have calm”, Barrett said at the news conference. While Manney was sacked from his position, he did not face any charges for the murder, and Milwaukee residents staged Black Lives Matter demonstrations to protest his impunity.

“What happened tonight may not have been right and I am not justifying that but no one can deny the fact that there are problems, racial problems in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, that need to be rectified”, Rainey said. “It is not the place you go to take pictures”.

Barrett and Flynn credited community and faith leaders for meeting with residents and calling for calm.

He indicated there have been no signs that outside groups, possibly from Chicago, have been in the Sherman Park neighborhood.

Mayor Tom Barrett said Monday the city is imposing a 10 p.m. curfew for teenagers and hinted it could be extended.

“This community is not interested in doing damage to where they live”, Flynn said.

Milwaukee police sparred with protesters, activists and rioters in the Sherman Park neighborhood of Milwaukee over the weekend and into early Monday morning, making 14 arrests. Police tried to disperse the crowd and warned of arrests.

Before the clashes broke out on Sunday evening, about 200 people had gathered to light candles near where Smith was killed.

The shooting occurred near the location of an August 9 double homicide in which a man was shot dead and another was fatally stabbed, police said.
