Drug Lord Among Those Kidnapped At Mexico Resort

Jalisco State Attorney General Eduardo Almaguer said that Alfredo, who is wanted in the US for helping his father traffic drugs, was one of six men with ties to the Sinaloa cartel taken by the attackers. However it was not another son of Guzman, Ivan, as Almaguer had suspected earlier in the day.

The other two victims, however, have still not been identified, leading to speculation that one of them might be Ivan Archivaldo Guzman Salazar.

The six suspected gang members were abducted at La Leche restaurant in the early hours of Monday in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco state.

Investigators reportedly believe it is likely a settling of scores between rival drug cartels.

Experts have said Ivan Archivaldo assumed control of parts of the cartel’s drug operations after his father was re-arrested in January. In 2009, he was indicted on US drug trafficking charges in Chicago along with his father and other Sinaloa cartel leaders.

The Sinaloa cartel, sometimes referred to by Mexican officials as the Pacific cartel, is the oldest drug cartel in Mexico.

Seven armed assailants burst into an upmarket restaurant in the resort in Puerto Vallarta on Monday with “long guns” and violently took the men who had been dining in a large group.

They interrupted a group of revelers in the white-walled restaurant, separating the men from the women, and left with a high-value captive, according to Mexican authorities. He said authorities were looking for those women for more information. Officials say that the identification was made through items found in vehicles at the crime scene and forensic work after the kidnapping. Authorities said they had not heard of anyone demanding a ransom.

The attention-grabbing attack on the Sinaloa cartel comes as Jalisco New Generation continues to challenge it for influence in Mexico. While Almaguer initially stated that Ivan Archivaldo was among the six taken, the attorney general backpedaled and did not name him during a press conference Tuesday night.

Investigators said it was likely part of a settling of scores between rival drug cartels
