Rate of price rise will not exceed 6 percent, says PM Modi

OUTLINING his government’s agenda during the Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the government’s resolve is to turn “Swaraj” (self-rule) into “Surajya” (good rule), adding that it resolves to fulfil the dream of “Ek Bharat, Sresth Bharat”.

Dignitaries from across the world, eminent professionals, and school students were present at the venue.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today backed a new inflation target of 4 per cent as he vowed to keep food inflation under check and ensure that the food plate of the poor does not become expensive. “For this, one needs to give importance to good governance, accountability and transparency”, he added. “We have not allowed inflation rate to cross 6 per cent because of the continued steps taken by us”, he said.

He said it was an opportunity to renew and resolve the energy to take the country to new heights. The rise in vegetable prices, he said, was on account of deficient rains earlier. “We remember Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Pandit Nehru and countless people who sacrificed their lives so that we attained Swarajya”, Modi said while addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort here.

He said the meaning of “Surajya” is a qualitative and positive change in the lives of the citizen of India.

On the spike in prices of pulses this year, he said sowing of pulses this year has risen by 1.5 times and with good monsoon and efforts like Minimum Support Price and bonus to farmers as well as increasing availability will make things better.

Modi said stuck projects, delays and wastage of money is criminal negligence. Welcoming the Prime Minister’s strategy of Reform, Perform and Transform, industry body CII hoped that the work culture of the government will continue to bring in further growth, development and prosperity to the young country of 125 billion.
