Mumbai shopkeeper attacked with sword after complaining about extortion

It’s believed the attack took place because the courageous shopkeeper raised his voice against local goons in the Chembur suburb of eastern Mumbai.

The incident was captured in a CCTV camera installed in the shop, Sonawane said adding that with its help, they managed to nab four members of the gang. According to police officials, the gang would threaten to burn down shops if they weren’t paid extortion money.

Rajnish Singh Thakur, the shopkeeper, suffered injuries to his neck and hand and is now undergoing intensive care treatment.

“He could have left the shop or could have sat in a corner, as he was just a customer, but he showed exemplary courage and saved my brother’s life”, said Manish Singh Thakur, the victim’s brother.

Meanwhile, the shopkeeper has been admitted to a hospital, police said.

On the fateful night, Rajnish was sitting on a chair on the counter, talking to a customer who had come to pay him money, when Akram Shaikh (28), one of the druggies, stormed in with the sword hidden behind his back.

Search is on for two more persons in connection with the incident. “We are the cops waiting for such an untoward incident or someone to die for taking action against the hooligans?” he asked. The four arrested accused were presented in court yesterday and remanded in police custody till August 14.
