Ryan dispatches challenger; Gallagher to vie for House seat

With 28.4 percent reporting, Ryan was leading 85 percent to Nehlen’s 15 percent. The polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Ryan’s race was the unexpected focus just a week after GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump threw a burst of publicity toward his little-known and inexperienced opponent, Nehlen. They included Joanne Simenson, who called Ryan “a big spender, just like the rest of them”.

“Congratulations to my friend Paul Ryan on a well-earned victory”, Priebus said in a statement after Ryan was declared victor. But they also could be read as an implicit critique of Trump, whose tone and approach to politics are far more slashing and confrontational than Ryan’s.

Following the resignation of Speaker John Boehner, Ryan only took the top job in the House after insisting he be able to return home each weekend to his family.

The Journal Times in Racine County posted a photo Tuesday showing a man in an American flag T-shirt carrying a sign with, “Nehlen for Congress” written on it.

Ryan easily handled upstart Paul Nehlen in a primary that drew more attention after Nehlen got a Twitter embrace from Donald Trump. He challenged Ryan to an arm-wrestling match if he wouldn’t debate him. Were Trump not to have endorsed Ryan and McCain, their wins could only have hurt him come November.

Until recently, Ryan had little reason to assume he would have any trouble against Nehlen: no House Speaker in recent history has lost his or her respective primary, and Ryan is popular in his district.

Businessman Paul Nehlen had been courting Trump supporters and won praise from the Republican presidential nominee last week. Ron Johnson in a rematch of their 2010 Senate race, but on Tuesday he needs to get past Scott Harbach to nail down the Democratic nomination.

Nehlen has frequently praised Trump during the campaign and Trump returned the compliment last week on social media, setting off a flap over whether the nominee would endorse Ryan.

Nehlen tried to use the speaker’s pro-trade views against him ahead of the primary.
