Google takes on FaceTime with ultra-pared-down video chat app, Duo

In the launch announcement, Google says that all calls with Duo are end-to-end encrypted. The problem is that with Android devices, callers can not be reached using FaceTime. According to commentators, it would be a hard sell in view of its late entry compared to strong, sensibly intertwined products like Facebook Messenger and Apple’s iMessage / FaceTime.

“Today, we’re releasing Google Duo – a simple 1-to-1 video calling app available for Android and iOS”, the search giant said in the blog post.

Google’s FaceTime killer seems more like a rip-off than an innovation. If you remember, Google had teased two new apps, Allo and Duo at this year’s I/O developer conference in May. “Video calling is the next best thing to being with someone in person”. The apps can be seen as great alternatives to Apple’s iMessage and FaceTime, respectively, as they’ll also going to work on iPhone, not just Android. From there, you can instantly begin a video call with a single tap.

Duo is also created to adjust for changing network conditions, so when bandwidth is limited it will reduce the video resolution without the call becoming choppy. For video calls on the go, Duo will switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data automatically without dropping your call.

Users of the app also have the option of disabling the Knock Knock feature whenever they choose. When an individual receives a call, the app’s Knock Knock feature lets the chat recipient see live video of the caller for some visual insight. Further, the company claims that the video quality will “gracefully reduce” to maintain the call.

The app will be available across the world in the next few days.
