Toronto consolidated atop the AL East with a 7-4 win to take two of three at the New York Yankees, with J.A. Happ (17-3) winning his 11th consecutive decision to become the first 17-game victor in the majors. This means he will be able to pitch next Tuesday. They will need the force to be with them if they want to continue to slim the gap in the Wild Card race. “It hadn’t been a great night up until that point”. In the American League Western division standings, our 63-55 Seattle Mariners are now 6.5 games in back of the first place 71-50 Texas Rangers.

Los Angeles (51-70) won for only the second time in the past 14 games, yet the Angels remain in last place in the American League East, trailing the Oakland Athletics by a game.

But then he pitched like a reasonable facsimile of an ace, stymieing Seattle for seven effective innings in a 6-4 Angels victory at Angel Stadium. The one run in the 1st would only be half of the Mariners run support on the night, an unusual occurrence when Hisashi Iwakuma is on the mound, who has gotten almost 6 runs of help in his outings on average. With two on in the seventh, Arquimendes Caminero hit him out with three straight 100 mile-per-hour fastballs to end the inning.

The two walks were uncharacteristic for Shoemaker, who has made eight starts without issuing a walk this season, but felt that his only big mistake was the home run to Cruz. An Albert Pujols 2-RBI double was the highlight of that frame. The Angels led 3-1. The dinger was his 27th of the season and pushed his RBI total to 75.

Ketel Marte drove in the tiebreaking run with a sacrifice fly, Leonys Martin scored from second base on a bunt, and the Mariners held on for a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night. Kole Calhoun followed with a double to center, but Escobar got a bad break and stopped at third. Then on a 3-2 pitch to Simmons, the Angels shortstop hit the ball sharply down the third base line. A key first-inning error, stranded runners as a result of failed at-bats with runners in scoring position and more struggles from reliever Nick Vincent couldn’t be overcome or hidden, no matter how poor the opponent.

The Mariners had the meat of their order coming up.

The Mariners are 9-2 in their last 11 overall, 13-3 in Iwakuma’s last 16 starts, and 4-1 in his last five starts against the AL West while the Angels are 1-11 in their last 12 overall, 1-4 in Shoemaker’s last five starts, but 11-4 in their last 15 home games.

Martin is 1-2 with a 2.70 ERA in five appearances over 10 innings this season for Seattle. He gave up four runs and six hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Seager ended Wednesday’s 4-3 victory by making a diving stop and throw to retire Simmons for the game’s final out with the bases loaded.

Cody Martin’s first major-league start in nearly a year didn’t get off to an auspicious beginning.

Sailors: LHP James Paxton played catch and is planned to toss a warm up area session Thursday.
